Zhaga Book 18 Explained: The Socketable LED Interface
Zhaga Book 18 is the interface specification that lets an outdoor luminaire accept sensing and communication modules from any certified vendor, years after it was installed. For street-lighting projects it is the difference between a fixture you can upgrade and a fixture you have to replace.
What Zhaga standardises
Zhaga is an industry consortium that standardises the interfaces between components of an LED luminaire — light engines, holders, drivers and connectivity fit systems — so that parts from different suppliers fit and work together. Each interface is published as a "Book".
Book 18 covers the interface between an outdoor luminaire and a sensing / communication module: a receptacle (socket) on the outside of the fixture and a matching plug on the node. The electrical interface is a 4-pin connector carrying 24 V DC, with DALI for control and a logic signal input (LSI). The 24 V choice matters — the socket carries no mains, so a module can be plugged or swapped in the field without an electrician.
The three editions, and what changed

Ed. 2.0 is the edition that matters commercially: it is the one referenced by the Zhaga-D4i certification programme, and the one that guarantees a node you buy in three years will work in a luminaire you buy today.
Zhaga-D4i: the socket plus the driver
A Zhaga socket on its own only solves the mechanical and 24 V part. Zhaga-D4i pairs Book 18 with D4i — the DALI Alliance's (DiiA) set of requirements for DALI inside a luminaire:
- DALI Part 250 — a bus power supply integrated in the driver, so sensors and nodes are powered from the driver with no separate DALI line.
- DALI Part 150 — an optional 24 V auxiliary supply (3 W average, around 6 W peak) for nodes that need more than the bus can give, such as cameras or radios.
- DALI Part 251 — luminaire asset data stored in the driver: GTIN, manufacture date, rated lumens, CCT, CRI and housing colour. A city can read its asset register from the pole.
- DALI Part 252 — energy and power reporting for real consumption measurement.
- DALI Part 253 — diagnostics and maintenance data: operating hours, start counter, thermal events. This is the basis for predictive maintenance.
A luminaire carrying the dual Zhaga-D4i logo has a powered Book 18 receptacle and D4i-certified drivers inside. That combination is what most smart-city tenders now ask for by name.
Book 18 vs the NEMA / ANSI C136.41 socket
Both are outdoor twist-lock receptacles and both are in use, which is exactly why Book 18 Ed. 3.0 exists. In short: ANSI C136.41 is mains-voltage and dominant in North America, Zhaga Book 18 is 24 V, far smaller, and built for data. If your project is in Europe or Latin America with a smart-city roadmap, Book 18 is the safer bet; if it is a North American utility retrofit using existing photocontrols, specify the NEMA socket — or the hybrid. What to check before specifying
- Which Book 18 edition the luminaire is certified to — Ed. 2.0 or later for real interoperability.
- Whether the socket is powered: a passive Book 18 receptacle is a plastic hole until the driver supplies the bus.
- Whether the drivers are D4i-certified, and whether the project needs the 24 V AUX as well as bus power.
- Whether you need the hybrid ANSI + Zhaga arrangement for your market.
- Surge protection for the node as well as the driver — a failed node takes the smart function offline even though the light still works.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Zhaga Book 18 the same as a Zhaga socket for LED drivers?
Not quite. Book 18 defines the receptacle for sensing and communication modules. The socketable LED driver interface is covered by a different Zhaga Book. In practice the two appear together in Zhaga-D4i luminaires: Book 18 socket on the outside, D4i driver (DALI-based) inside.
Do I need D4i if my luminaire already has a Zhaga socket?
You need D4i for the socket to be useful. Without a D4i driver there is no bus power and no standardised data, so a plugged-in node needs its own power source and cannot exchange asset, energy or diagnostic data with the driver.
Can a Zhaga node be added after installation?
Yes — that is the point. Luminaires ship with a blank cap in the receptacle, and a module is field-installed later without opening the fixture or touching mains wiring, provided the socket is powered and the edition matches.
Is 24 V enough for communication modules?
For sensing and most radios, yes. Cellular or camera-based nodes usually draw more, which is why DALI Part 150 defines the additional 24 V auxiliary supply at 3 W average with higher short-term peaks.
