Choosing an IP67 LED Driver: Beyond the Waterproof Rating
What IP67 does and doesn't tell you
IP67 means dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion. It is a housing-ingress rating, full stop. A driver can be IP67 and still die in its first lightning season, cook in an enclosed fixture, or brown out on a rural grid. The rating is the entry ticket, not the specification.
Four specs that decide outdoor survival
Surge protection. Grid-connected outdoor luminaires face induced surge from nearby strikes and switching events. Urban grids generally tolerate 6kV protection; lightning-prone regions demand 10kV. Confirm the differential and common-mode rating, not a single number.
Input voltage range. A 90-305Vac universal input covers 120V, 230V and 277V grids worldwide, plus tolerates the sags and swells common at the end of long rural feeds.
Thermal design. Potting compound conducts heat away from components while sealing the board — but the driver's rated ambient temperature and Tc point determine real placement limits. Look for -30°C to +70°C operation with clearly documented derating.
Lifetime data. A driver specified for 50,000+ hours at rated temperature has been thermally validated. Generic 'long life' claims are not.
Mounting and installation realities
- Mount drivers with wiring glands pointing down to avoid water pooling at cable entries.
- Respect the Tc point placement inside the luminaire — potted housings still need conduction path to the fixture body.
- Pair with an ANSI C136.41 NEMA socket if smart-city control nodes may be added later.
