LiFePO4 vs Lead-Acid for Telecom Backup: The Total Cost Math
The upfront price illusion
A VRLA lead-acid string still wins the initial quote in most regions. But telecom backup is a cycles-and-years game: sites deep-cycle batteries regularly, and every cycle costs life. The right comparison is cost per kWh delivered over the site's service life, not cost per kWh purchased.
Cycle life: the decisive number
Quality VRLA delivers roughly 300-500 cycles at deep discharge. LiFePO4 cells in telecom-grade systems deliver 4,000-6,000+ cycles at 80% depth of discharge. That is a 10x difference in usable throughput, which is why the LiFePO4 total-cost curve crosses VRLA within the first battery replacement cycle.
Weight, space and installation
LiFePO4 stores roughly 3x the energy per kilogram. For rooftop and tower sites with structural limits, and for cabinets with fixed footprints, halving-to-quartering battery mass directly cuts installation labor and structural cost. 19-inch rack formats drop into spaces designed for VRLA.
Telemetry changes operations
Smart BMS over RS485/CAN reports SOC, SOH, cell voltages and temperatures to your NMS. Instead of scheduled site visits to test battery health, maintenance becomes exception-driven — you visit the sites that actually need it. For operators managing hundreds of sites, this is often the largest single saving.
When lead-acid still makes sense
Float-only applications with rare discharge, extremely low ambient temperatures without heating, and markets with constrained capex remain defensible VRLA territory. For everything else — especially 5G sites with frequent cycling — LiFePO4 wins on math.
