The certification difference

The original DALI standard (IEC 62386) defined a protocol but never required certification. Vendors could claim DALI compatibility with only self-testing, which led to interoperability surprises in the field. DALI 2.0, managed by the DALI Alliance (DiiA), requires every product to pass an independent certification program before carrying the DALI-2 trademark.

For fixture makers this flips the risk profile: a DALI-2 certified driver from any vendor is tested against the same command set, addressing scheme and fault reporting behavior. Ecosystems composed entirely of DALI-2 devices interoperate by design rather than by promise.

DT8: color control becomes standard

Version 1 tunable-white and RGB implementations relied on vendor-specific extensions. DALI 2.0 standardizes DT8 device types for color control: tunable white (CCT) and color mixing (RGB/W) each expose two DALI addresses, letting a single DT8 driver drive both channels of a tunable-white engine under standardized commands.

The practical consequence for human-centric lighting: tunable-white panels, downlights and linear fixtures from different manufacturers can share the same scene programming, because the color-control vocabulary is no longer proprietary.
