12V Wall-Mount Adapter for Set-Top Box Projects in Mexico & Brazil
The Challenge
- A consumer-electronics programme in Latin America supplied set-top boxes to operators in Mexico and Brazil, and the external wall-mount adapter had to meet three specific requirements at once: DOE Level VI / EU CoC Tier 2 efficiency for cross-region acceptance, 6 kV surge on the AC input to survive tropical thunderstorms and weak grids, and 8 kV air-discharge ESD tolerance on accessible surfaces.
- Quantity and unit cost both mattered: tens of thousands of units annually, shipped as boxed accessories with the set-top box, so any rejected batch would mean an operator-scale recall.
- Latin American operators also want adapters with the right AC plug variant for each market, ideally from a single BOM line so the same driver electronics ship with US, EU and UK inlet variants.
The Solution
- We supplied a 12V 1.5A (18W) XTS-18WM wall-mount adapter, EU inlet, engineered against the XTS series BOM. The platform is rated DOE Level VI / CoC TIER 2 with <0.075 W no-load consumption, well below the limits the operators' energy-efficiency approvals require.
- AC-input 6 kV differential-mode surge was met by an enhanced MOV + GDT front-end added to the standard platform. ESD was qualified to 8 kV air discharge on the enclosure seams, cable entry and output connector.
- The same driver electronics are available with US, EU and UK inlet variants, so a single XTS-18WM BOM line can ship into Mexico (US inlet), Brazil (EU inlet on the early programme, BR plug later) and other LATAM countries without re-engineering.

Case Study FAQ
What is DOE Level VI / CoC TIER 2 and why does it matter?
These are the US Department of Energy Level VI and EU Code of Conduct Tier 2 external power-supply efficiency standards. They cap no-load power (typically <0.075 W for an 18 W class) and require a minimum average active-mode efficiency. Most consumer-electronics operators in the Americas and EU require Level VI for new product acceptance.
Can the same adapter ship into Mexico, Brazil and the rest of LATAM?
Yes — the XTS-18WM platform ships with US, EU and UK inlet variants from the same driver electronics, so a single BOM line covers Mexico (US), Brazil (EU or BR plug) and most other LATAM countries without re-engineering. The AC input range of 90 – 264 V covers all regional grid voltages.
How is 6 kV surge qualified?
The 6 kV differential-mode surge is qualified at the AC input with a defined waveform (1.2/50 µs voltage, 8/20 µs current) and a defined source impedance. The enhanced front-end uses a coordinated MOV + GDT so the surge is clamped before it reaches the converter stage. Test reports are available on request under NDA.
How is 8 kV ESD qualified?
Air-discharge ESD is qualified per IEC 61000-4-2 with 8 kV applied to accessible surfaces (enclosure seams, DC cable entry, output connector). The qualification includes both functional and post-test operation: the unit must continue operating normally after the discharge without user intervention.
