UPS Backup Solutions for Hospital Ventilators

A ventilator is a continuous-duty load: it cannot ride through a transfer, a voltage sag or a frequency dip the way an office PC can. XGW online double-conversion UPS systems isolate the ventilator from the raw grid at all times and deliver a clean sine wave with zero transfer, then bridge the gap to facility generator or utility restore with a battery string sized to the load. This guide covers what a ventilator UPS must do and how to size it.

What a ventilator UPS must do

Sizing runtime for a ventilator circuit

Use the same method as any critical load: total the VA/W rating of everything on the circuit (ventilator plus ancillary devices such as the suction unit, monitor and infusion pump on the same outlet group), add margin for inrush, then size the battery for the required minutes.

Illustrative example (verify against the device nameplate): a ventilator circuit drawing ~600 W with ancillary loads totalling ~900 W (≈1.5 kVA) on a 2 kVA single-phase UPS, with a 48V LiFePO4 battery, gives roughly 20–40 minutes of runtime at that load. Actual runtime depends on the battery Ah, the UPS efficiency and the real load — we size it from your load list, not from a generic table.

The battery capacity formula we use: Capacity (Ah) ≈ load (W) × backup hours ÷ (bus voltage × efficiency). Send us the load list and the minutes you need and we return a sized configuration.

XGW options for ventilator and room-level protection

Single-phase tower & rack UPS 1–20 kVA

Online double-conversion, output PF 1, up to 95.5% efficiency on 1–3 kVA units and 110–300V input range — sized for a bedside or ICU room group. Hot-standby or parallel options for the larger loads.

LiFePO4 UPS battery 48V–409V

Drop-in replacement for the VRLA string on the matched DC bus, up to 6C peak discharge to carry inrush, with CAN/RS485 BMS reporting SOC and alarms to the UPS.

For whole-ward or central protection, the modular three-phase UPS (50–720 kVA) adds N+X redundancy so a module fault never drops the load.

Compliance & scope note

XGW UPS and battery systems are general-purpose critical-power products certified to IEC 62040 (UPS) and UN38.3 (battery transport). They are not medical devices and are not certified to IEC 60601 or any medical-equipment standard. This page describes power-protection principles and XGW product capabilities; it is not a statement of compatibility with any specific ventilator or medical device. Compatibility must be confirmed against the device manufacturer’s published power specification and your local electrical and regulatory requirements before deployment in patient-care areas.
