LiFePO4 vs VRLA Battery: Which Backup Battery Wins?

LiFePO4VRLABackup PowerTCO

VRLA (valve-regulated lead-acid, AGM or gel) is the legacy standby battery — low cost, mature, heavy. LiFePO4 is the lithium alternative that costs more to buy but lasts far longer and weighs half as much. Which wins depends on your duty cycle.

The Short Answer

The right call depends on duty cycle, not on one battery being "wrong":

What "VRLA" Means

VRLA = valve-regulated lead-acid. The two common subtypes are AGM (absorbed glass mat) and gel. Both are sealed, recombinant (little watering) and sit at ~2.0V/cell. They dominate legacy UPS and telecom plants.

Where Each Fits

Safety & Recycling

Both are recyclable. LiFePO4 is thermally stable (no cobalt, no thermal runaway in normal use). VRLA vents hydrogen if overcharged, so it needs ventilation.

FAQ

Does LiFePO4 need venting like VRLA?

No. LiFePO4 is a sealed lithium cell managed by a BMS and does not off-gas in normal operation, though a cabinet still needs normal ventilation.

Is VRLA ever the better buy?

For a seldom-used standby with a tiny budget and plenty of space, yes, but factor in replacement and labour every 2–4 years.
