Why UPS Systems Are Replacing Lead-Acid with LiFePO4
For years, valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) batteries have been the default backup power source for UPS systems, telecom sites and data centres. They are cheap to buy and familiar to specify — but the economics and the physics have shifted. More operators are now replacing VRLA strings with LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) because it solves the three problems that make lead-acid expensive in service.
The limits of traditional lead-acid (VRLA)
- Shorter battery lifetime. A VRLA string typically delivers 3–5 years in float service and far fewer cycles under real discharge, so it is replaced several times over the life of the equipment it backs up.
- Frequent replacement and maintenance. Lead-acid needs equalisation charging, periodic capacity testing and eventual disposal — all of which mean site visits, labour and downtime.
- Heavy weight and limited installation space. VRLA is dense and bulky; cabinet and floor-load limits often cap how much backup you can actually install.
Why LiFePO4 is the more reliable alternative
- Longer cycle life. XGW LiFePO4 strings are rated for 5,000+ cycles at 80% depth of discharge — roughly an order of magnitude more than VRLA, so the battery outlasts the equipment it protects.
- Higher energy density. The same stored energy takes about one-third of the volume and half the weight of a VRLA string, freeing rack space and easing cabinet loading.
- Lower maintenance. Sealed cells with no equalisation, no watering and no off-gassing. Health is reported remotely instead of checked on site.
- Smart BMS monitoring through CAN/RS485. An active-balancing BMS reports every cell's voltage, current and temperature, enforcing over-charge, over-discharge, over-current, short-circuit and thermal limits — and exposes SOC/SOH to the UPS host or facility NMS.
