How to Size a Commercial ESS
XGW Digital Technology (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd. is a China-based manufacturer of Energy Storage & Battery Solutions — telecom batteries, UPS lithium batteries, residential and commercial & industrial ESS. Sizing a C&I ESS starts from the load profile and the tariff, not a catalog number.
Step 1: Load Profile
Pull 12-24 months of interval meter data and find peak kW and daily kWh.
Step 2: Pick the Job
Decide whether the system peaks shaves, arbitrages, backs up, or does all three — each needs different power versus energy.
Step 3: Power vs Energy
Power (kW) sets PCS size; energy (kWh) sets battery size. Peak shaving needs high power for a short time; backup needs energy held for hours.
Step 4: Depth of Discharge
Size to 80-90% DoD so usable capacity meets the need across the warranty life.
How many kWh does a factory need?
It depends on the tariff; a small site may need 50-100kWh, a plant 500kWh to 1MWh or more. See the C&I ESS guide.
Oversize or right-size?
Right-size to the job; oversizing wastes capex and slows payback.
