C&I ESS Guide
Commercial & industrial (C&I) storage is where battery payback is clearest: you shave peaks, dodge demand charges and keep the line running through outages.
What it does for a site
- Peak shaving / demand-charge reduction: discharge during the monthly peak window so the utility never sees the spike.
- Time-of-use arbitrage: charge on cheap off-peak energy, use it when rates are high.
- Backup: ride through outages for critical loads.
Typical size
From ~100 kWh for a small site to MWh-scale for factories and campuses. Size from your peak demand (kW) and the hours you want to cover.
Equipment
A PCS + BMS + EMS stack, often in outdoor cabinets, with site isolation and fire compliance. In North America, UL 9540A thermal-runaway propagation testing is the fire-code gate; check it before you commit.
Design steps
- Profile the load and find the peak/demand window.
- Set the target (peak shave / backup / arbitrage) and hours.
- Size kWh and PCS kW; pick EMS logic (TOU schedule or peak-follow).
- Confirm codes, interconnection and the PCS/BMS/EMS interfaces.
XGW's Industrial ESS is built for exactly this duty.
