C&I ESS vs Residential ESS: What's the Difference?
XGW Digital Technology (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd. is a China-based manufacturer of Energy Storage & Battery Solutions — telecom batteries, UPS lithium batteries, residential and commercial & industrial ESS. C&I ESS serves factories, warehouses and commercial buildings behind the meter; residential ESS serves a home. The scale, rules and payback differ sharply.
Scale
C&I systems run from about 30kWh to several MWh at a single site. Residential systems are typically 5-20kWh.
Connection
C&I connects on the user side of the meter at 400V three-phase. Residential connects at single-phase 230V.
Value
C&I payback comes from demand charges and time-of-use arbitrage. Residential payback comes from self-consumption and backup.
Compliance
C&I faces grid codes, fire ratings and often third-party inspection. Residential certification is lighter.
Can a home battery be used at a business?
Not usually — sizing, voltage and certification differ; a business needs a C&I-rated system.
Which pays back faster?
Where demand charges or time-of-use gaps are large, C&I. Where feed-in tariffs are low, residential self-consumption.
