IP20 vs IP67 LED Driver
The IP code tells you what a driver enclosure keeps out. IP20 and IP67 sit at opposite ends of the outdoor question.
What the numbers mean
- IP20 — protects against fingers (12 mm) but no protection from moisture or dust. Indoor, enclosed use only.
- IP67 — fully dust-tight and protected against immersion up to 1 m for 30 minutes. Suitable for wet and outdoor locations.
What actually changes inside
An IP67 driver is potted or gasket-sealed, which changes three things a specifier cares about:
- Thermal. Sealing traps heat. IP67 drivers often need a lower wattage derating or a metal housing to shed heat.
- Cost. Potting, gaskets and testing add cost — typically 20–40% over an equivalent IP20 unit.
- Serviceability. A sealed driver is replaced, not repaired.
Where each belongs
Use IP20 inside a dry luminaire or cabinet. Use IP67 for façade, garden, street and industrial fittings where condensation, rain or wash-down is possible. See Choosing an IP67 LED Driver for the buying detail.
