How to Choose the Right AC-DC Power Adapter
A power adapter is not a commodity you grab by wattage alone. Get the output voltage, current headroom, polarity and connector right, and confirm it meets DoE Level VI efficiency and the safety marks your market requires.
Match the Output Voltage Exactly
The adapter's rated output voltage must equal the device label. A 12V Luminaire or router needs 12V, not 12.5V or 15V. Even a small over-voltage quietly stresses the load; under-voltage causes brownouts and restarts.
Size Current With 20-30% Headroom
Rated output current (amps) must meet or exceed the device draw. For a 2A load, specify a 2.5A-3A adapter. Headroom keeps the adapter cool and extends life; running at 100% of rating shortens it fast.
Polarity and Connector
Most CCTV and routers use a center-positive 5.5 x 2.1mm barrel; some need 5.5 x 2.5mm. Reversed polarity or a loose barrel destroys the gear, so confirm before bulk shipment. Locking connectors and terminal blocks suit fixed installations.
Regulated and Efficient
Use a regulated switch-mode adapter, not an unregulated transformer. Look for DoE Level VI (US) or EU Code of Conduct Tier 2 efficiency, and no-load draw under 0.1W for wall adapters under 250W.
Temperature Derating
Rated power falls as ambient rises. An adapter rated 60W at 25C may deliver only ~48W at 50C. Size for the enclosure's worst-case summer temperature, not the lab.
What XGW Supplies
We build 5W-200W AC-DC adapters in wall, desktop and interchangeable-AC-clip formats, with UL/cUL, CE, UKCA, FCC and CB, private-label and connector customization from 500 units. See the router and CPE adapter guide.
FAQ
Can I use a higher-current adapter on the same device?
Yes, as long as voltage and polarity match. The device draws what it needs; a 3A adapter on a 2A load simply runs cooler.
What does 12V 2A actually mean?
12 volts output at up to 2 amps, i.e. 24W max. The device must stay under that 24W.
