12V vs 24V Power Adapter: When to Specify Each

Power AdapterVoltageSelection

12V dominates consumer and CCTV gear; 24V is the workhorse of industrial control and long cable runs. The choice is about current, cable cost and voltage drop, not which number is 'better'.

The Math: P = V x I

For the same power, doubling voltage halves current. A 48W load draws 4A at 12V but only 2A at 24V. Lower current means thinner cable and less voltage drop over distance.

12V: Consumer and Short Runs

LED strips, routers, small CCTV cams and automotive-style gear standardize on 12V. Batteries are 12V, so off-grid and vehicle systems line up naturally. Keep runs short - 12V drops fast on thin wire.

24V: Industrial and Long Runs

PLCs, DIN-rail gear and field devices use 24VDC (IEC 61131). For a 30m run to a sensor, 24V arrives with usable voltage where 12V would sag below spec. Many industrial PSUs are 24V by default.

You Cannot Swap Arbitrarily

A 12V device on a 24V supply is destroyed; a 24V device on 12V simply will not start. If you must bridge, use a DC-DC converter, not a mismatched adapter.

FAQ

Is 24V more efficient than 12V?

Not intrinsically, but for long cable runs 24V loses less to resistance, so the system wastes less and uses thinner, cheaper wire.

Can I power a 12V strip from a 24V supply with a converter?

Yes - a 24V-to-12V DC-DC step-down regulator is the clean way; never connect the strip directly.
