How Long Does a Telecom Lithium Battery Last? Cycle Life, Runtime and What Shortens It
Rated cycle life is not service life
A 48V telecom LiFePO4 battery is rated for 6,000+ cycles at 80% depth of discharge. At one full cycle per day that is roughly 16 years of calendar cycling — but sites rarely cycle fully every day. Real service life is set by calendar aging and temperature, so most operators see 8-12 years before capacity drops below 80%.
What decides runtime at a cell site
Runtime equals usable capacity divided by load. A 100Ah 48V module delivers about 4.8kWh; a 300W BTS load runs roughly 16 hours. Headroom matters: sizing to 80% DoD, not 100%, protects both runtime and life. The BMS must report per-cell voltage and temperature so you can see degradation before it becomes an outage.
What actually shortens telecom battery life
Three killers dominate the field: high ambient temperature (every 10°C above 25°C roughly halves life), chronic over-discharge below the BMS cutoff, and poor charge-voltage settings during a VRLA-to-LiFePO4 retrofit. Active cooling or shaded cabinet siting, plus correct charger setup, recover most of the lost years.
LiFePO4 vs VRLA in the field
VRLA lead-acid typically lasts 3-5 years and needs equalization maintenance; LiFePO4 runs 8-12 years with zero watering and half the weight. For remote sites where a truck roll costs more than the battery, the lithium total cost per kWh delivered is lower even at a higher upfront price.

Frequently asked questions
How many years does a 48V telecom LiFePO4 battery last?
Typically 8-12 years in field service, versus 3-5 years for VRLA, depending mainly on ambient temperature and discharge depth.
Can extreme temperature kill a telecom battery?
Yes — sustained operation above 35°C can halve LiFePO4 life. Siting the cabinet in shade or adding active cooling is the single biggest longevity lever.
