24V Industrial Power Supply for PLC Control Systems: Sizing, Boost and Redundancy
Why 24V DC for PLC control
24V DC is the de-facto control voltage because it is safe to touch, quiet enough against plant noise, and standardized across PLC, sensors and actuators. A single 24V rail simplifies wiring and spares — one PSU family feeds the whole panel.
Size for inrush, not just steady load
Contactors, solenoids and motor starters pull inrush far above running current. A PSU with 150% short-time power boost rides through startup without oversizing: a 240W unit with boost covers a brief 360W demand. Without boost you buy the next chassis up just to survive switching.
Power boost earns its rating
Boost is a timed over-power window of seconds, not continuous headroom. Size steady-state at 60-70% of rated wattage so boost is reserved for inrush and transient peaks, keeping the unit cool and long-lived.
N+1 redundancy and DC-OK
For panels where downtime is expensive, parallel two units with decoupling for N+1, and wire the DC-OK relay contact to the PLC so a failing PSU logs an alarm before the 24V bus collapses. A single signaling terminal prevents a silent power loss from becoming a line stoppage.
XGW DIN rail PSUs
Our 25-1000W DIN rail series offers 150% power boost, active PFC up to 94% efficiency, parallel/series operation, DC-OK contacts and UL/CE/CB certification in metal housings — OEM from 500 units.
Frequently asked questions
Why 24V and not 12V for PLC systems?
24V carries less current for the same power, drops less voltage over long wire runs, and is the universal control standard — easier spares and safer wiring than 12V at panel scale.
Do I need redundancy for a small control panel?
Only if downtime is costly. For non-critical panels a single correctly boosted PSU is enough; add N+1 when a power loss stops a line or process.
