Replacing UPS Batteries with LiFePO4
Most UPS units run on 12V or 48V battery strings. LiFePO4 drops straight in at the same nominal voltage, but it brings a BMS and a different charge profile you must respect.
Same Nominal, Different Chemistry
A 12V LiFePO4 pack replaces a 12V VRLA; a 48V string is sixteen 3.2V cells. Nominal voltage matches, so the UPS sees a familiar battery.
The BMS Changes Everything
LiFePO4 has a battery management system that protects each cell. The UPS no longer 'trickles' a lead-acid float; the BMS wants a proper CC-CV charge and cuts off at limits.
Charger Compatibility
Most modern UPS chargers handle LiFePO4's 14.4-14.6V (12V) absorption fine. Very old constant-float chargers may under-charge lithium. Verify before swap.
What You Gain
- Cycle life: 2000-6000 vs 300-500 for VRLA.
- Weight: roughly half for the same energy.
- Maintenance: no equalisation, no acid leaks.
Will my UPS firmware reject lithium?
Usually not - it reads voltage, not chemistry. Some enterprise UPS need a battery-type setting; check the manual.
Is the runtime the same?
At equal watt-hours, yes. You often get more usable runtime because lithium holds voltage flatter under load.
